WAT Residency Testimonials
"As someone who often works from home, it was absolutely delightful to be able to set up in the warm and friendly environment of Wide Angle. It's such a motivator to be surrounded by energised creatives to get focused on a project. I would recommend the space to anyone, especially if you need to focus on your work and I can't thank Franziska enough for providing everything I needed including a sounding board and constructive feedback on my creative projects. I was able to bring in other people to help with the workload as well, effectively creating a mini production office to grow when needed and then remain agile and lean when the workload eases off."
Lara van Raay from Small World Documentaries, February 2023
“The Wide Angle Tasmania Residency enabled me, as a projection designer, to work with director Luke Campbell from Second Echo Ensemble. Luke is an artist living with a disability where it can help to work practically to resolve show creation concepts. Luke has lots of big ideas and when it comes to a multi-projector design that uses a motion capture suit to control his live avatar then it needs a big space. We had been working in my studio for six months prior, and we were at a point where we needed to start trialling some of the ideas at scale. Wide Angle Tasmania was able to provide us with their cinema space for a month to resolve the entire first act of Luke's performance. The residency ended with a showing to invited guests and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. The work has now been selected to appear at Performance Space in Sydney in September. This would not have been possible without the support of Wide Angle Tasmania.”
Jason James, June 2021
“As I sit and watch some of the first rendered frames from my animated web series, I am incredibly thankful for the support that Wide Angle Tasmania gave me in getting to this point. I’d had many false starts working on the web series idea. Five screenplays started and abandoned thanks to the chaos of working from home in 2020. It became all too easy to just let time slip away and think “I’ll finish it tomorrow”.
Through their Washington Residency program, I was given access to an office, and the time and space I needed to develop a web series and write the screenplay for the pilot episode.
Not only did the office space allow me to focus on what needed to be done, but the expectation that I would actually turn up and do something in there, was a great motivator and kept me from putting writing off until another day. More importantly, turning up and doing - sitting at a desk and writing every day - and seeing the progress as more and more pages were written - became a welcome habit and rebuilt the work ethic that I’d somehow lost the year before.
So once again, a huge thank you to Wide Angle Tasmania and its wonderful staff, without whose generous support, this project might never have gotten off the ground."
Jeff Kirkland, April 2021
Ninna Millikan and Takani Clark, February 2019
"A huge thanks to Wide Angle Tasmania for The Washington Residency opportunity. This proved immensely valuable to Electric Yak. In our time spent there we were able to focus on our development slate, submit funding applications and execute some crucial in-house development tasks. Whilst working in a community hub we were able to engage with the wider screen community here and even entered into discussions with new and emerging local creatives. Having access to this space enabled us to achieve our primary goal of finalising the financing of our new web-series and were able to commence production shortly after."
Paul Moran, Electric Yak, December 2019
"TAS CASTING are so incredibly thankful for the support of Wide Angle Tasmania and the Washington Residency for giving us a productive and positive office space to establish our business. As part of the Washington Residency we received invaluable guidance in regard to our industry and direct contact with film makers and industry professionals. The space was positive, quiet and productive with all the resources we needed to get our business functioning professionally. We were also lucky enough to be enrolled in the End Game initiative which greatly supported us in achieving our goals over the 3 months."
Lisa and Aeshlie, Tas Casting, September 2018
"I had access to an office, some equipment and was able to use the hall and mini cinema for the events I had planned. A benefit of this residency was that it allowed me the luxury of failure and to make mistakes. This in turn has led to reflection on how to modify the idea do it in a better and more practical way. In the meantime, by doing something rather than talking about it, I’ve engaged a number of key stakeholders... and also met some great collaborators who have experience in streaming and have provided some valuable advice on how to do it differently going forward."
Mark Thomson, December 2018
