ABOUT THE PRODUCTION INITIATIVES
WAT production initiatives provide talented Tasmanians with on-set experience that progress their career, educational and/or creative aspirations.
WAT’s production inititiatives are designed to:
- Assist participants to develop creative, technical and collaboration skills
- Increase interactions between experienced and emerging practitioners
- Increase production of Tasmanian screen stories that embrace diverse subjects, employ a variety of genres, styles, technologies and platforms
- Replenish the screen community by including new practitioners, new ideas and new approaches to production
In 2017 WAT will offer support through 4 production initiatives:
WAT a NERVE
Since 2008 we’ve helped screen practitioners to create their first short film. Previously supported by Screen Australia under the banners of Raw Nerve/RED Flag, Wide Angle has built a highly successful model of mentoring, training and support for screen creators since first delivering this programme in 2008. From 2017 WAT will continue this successful model of practitioner development; teams get a cash budget and Wide Angle support to go through the full process of making a short screen project. WAT a NERVE provides an opportunity for practitioners to make a defining work. That might be a short film for international festivals, or a digital series to be distributed online.
In this round, WAT will support ONE short form narrative project (duration up to 15mins) with:
- Cash budget of $2,500
- Mentor producer/script editing
- Insurances (public liability and volunteer accident)
- WAT equipment hire (to $5,000 value)
- free registration for ONE team member in selected WAT training courses (see dates below)
- industry screening and promotion
WAT will retain 51% of copyright.
THRIVE
For those with less experience, THRIVE provides teams with mentorship and in-kind support including production equipment and insurances. Practitioners build on their experience of creating no-budget short form projects by developing the skills, networks and attitudes they’ll need to attract future support for their projects.
In this round, WAT will support TWO short form narrative projects (duration up to 7mins) with:
- Production mentor/script advice
- Insurances (public liability and volunteer accident)
- WAT equipment hire (to $2,500 value)
- free registration for ONE team member in selected WAT training courses (see dates below)
- industry screening and promotion
WAT will retain 49% of copyright.
BOOST
Access to quality production equipment can make or break a screen project. Teams receive access to the WAT FILM KIT to raise the production values of their screen story.
In this round, WAT will support THREE projects with:
- Equipment hire to the value of $2,500 per project)
- Industry screening
WAT will retain 49% of copyright
SHOOT
An opportunity for WAT members to access the FILM KIT at half the usual hire rate – to help get their screen story shot.
Open year round, teams can apply for discount on equipment hire (50% of commercial rate) capped to a value of $1000 discount
