Earlier in September we launched our Screen Entrepreneurs resource hub. The resource hub focusses on the core entrepreneurial areas of business skills and planning. The resource hub is an extension of our Screen Entrepreneurs workshop series that was held over three weekends across May, June and July.  

            Presented by industry guru Monica Davidson of Creative + Business, the workshop series was for screen freelancers and business operators that focused on the core entrepreneurial areas of business skills and planning, financial management and marketing. The workshops were practical, interactive and fun! They provided the attendees with great insight and resources to help them realise their screen business dreams.

Sam Tooker, Ursula Woods and Jeff Kirkland are this year’s NERVE recipients. Through this initiative they will each produce their very first professional short films. Sam has written and will direct his irreverent comedy film Dennis Shake, Ursula is developing her musical mock-umentary Clockumentaryand Jeff is working with producer Tara Bufton on gritty crime drama Red. Many of you will be familiar with NERVE as Wide Angle’s annual development program that curates quality short films and helps launch the careers of their filmmakers.

Wide Angle Tasmania needs an awesome replacement ADMIN ASSISTANT for approx. 4 months (mid March to July, 2019 - Dates TBC).

Admin Assistant Role
We're looking for someone who is a team player and will keep our office ticking over - everything from checking out gear to raising an invoice. You will have excellent people and organisational skills for dealing with our members and the broader screen sector. Your responsibilities will include answering the phone and emails, scheduling equipment and facility hires and events, updating our website, databases and preparing newsletters. You'll need to be methodical, have a strong eye for detail and take pride in your work.

Reporting directly to WAT’s Executive Director the Admin Assistant will work closely with the WAT community and with WAT’s Project Co-Ordinator.

Wide Angle Tasmania is seeking interest for casual employment in 2019.  We are seeking Front of House, Bar Staff and Technical Support for our programmes and events.  

Four first-time film directors have been selected for support through the Wide Angle Tasmania’s short film initiative NERVE 2018. The aim of NERVE is to produce high quality films on a small budget to showcase emerging talent and provide a pathway to industry.  This year four filmmakers have been selected, all directing their first funded film:  Mick Lowenstein – Little Beauty, Victoria Bremner – Printed in Ink, George Underwood – Karen and Alex Laird – Tabernacle.   

Today marks the second anniversary of the announcement that Wide Angle Tasmania was saved from closure after a generous donation from a group committed to encouraging new Australian filmmakers.  

To celebrate, Wide Angle Tasmania has launched WAT SHARES – an online platform for filmmakers todevelop film projects, build businesses and learn new screen skills.

Budding Tasmanian filmmakers can now access free, high quality film contracts to use with cast, crew and location owners on their low and no-budget films.  

This weekend, Wide Angle Tasmania celebrates the opening of Tasmania’s centre for screen.  Since opening in 2005, Wide Angle Tasmania has been the first point of contact for the Tasmanian screen industry - providing production opportunities, training, mentorship and filmmaking equipment to thousands of Tasmanian filmmakers. 

Wide Angle Tasmania responded to Screen Tasmania's invitation for feedback on the agency's Draft program guidelines with the following submission provided on August 21, 2017.

Abi Binning, Executive Director of Wide Angle Tasmania appeared today at the public hearing of The House of Representatives Standing Committee on Communications and the Arts to speak to the submission made jointly with the Media Resource Centre to the Inquiry into factors contributing to the growth and sustainability of the Australian Film and Television industry.

We were pleased to have the opportunity to highlight our concern that Australia cannot create a thriving screen industry unless it provides opportunities from storytellers from across the breadth of Australia to participate.  We called for a policy and strategy which allows new skills and new regional voices to enter the market.  The full submission is included below.
