Wide Angle membership means you can join our Writers Group for free. Writers Group meets weekly at 6 Washington St, South Hobart and for those outside Hobart, by video-conference. Writers Group is coordinated by ex-movie studio creative executive, Robert Watson. Come and ask any film question you like – and we'll discuss it.
Whether you are new to filmmaking, a bookworm who wonders how novels are turned into screenplays, a filmmaker with an untamed film script, a history/society researcher, or a pro from any screen field, Writers Group provides a casual social setting to increase your screenwriting knowledge and skills, shoot the breeze – and meet other film people. You can come to explore film theory, research, or practise screenwriting skills that improve (or kick-start) your own project. Perhaps you have only an idea, or you are stuck with a project in any format or genre. Bring your laptop or tablet if you plan to use this time to write. It is your choice to discuss your project or keep your writing entirely confidential.
This is a good way to meet others or achieve a creative goal. Enjoy the discipline of casual regular meetings with good creative energy. Your Writers Group coordinator Robert Watson is an ex-university screenwriting lecturer, has held elder permission for Aboriginal projects, has worked in Asia, the U.S. and Europe and is a qualified Early Childhood teacher. He comes from Ian Robinson's Melbourne writers group that first introduced Hero/Heroine Journey theory and other screen analysis skills to Australian writers.
Our ‘cafe society’ Writers Group meets every Monday between 1pm and 2.30pm for the next 6 weeks. You are invited to meet regularly or drop-in when you’re free. RSVP to Wide Angle Tasmania ahead of time and we'll link you in on line via video conference.
When: 1-2.30pm Monday Nov 8, 15, 22, 29, Dec 6 & 13.
Where: 6 Washington Street, South Hobart OR by video conference for those outside Hobart

In 2020 we raised funds for Audacity Fund 2020. Read here about the audacious films that were supported through the Audacity fund in 2016.
Wide Angle Tasmania’s Audacity Fund 2020
Here’s an opportunity to help Tasmanians with something to say. Contributing to Wide Angle’s Audacity Fundwill give talented Tasmanian filmmakers an important break. And it will help Wide Angle Tasmania to continue building the skills and experience of many more Tasmanians wanting to work in film, television and on-line production.
What is WAT (Wide Angle Tasmania)?
Wide Angle Tasmania (WAT) nurtures Tasmanian filmmakers by providing advice, training, equipment and production initiatives. WAT screens films to thousands of Tasmanians and each year showcases Tasmanian stories at festivals across Australia. It’s a one-stop shop for individuals, community groups, Councils, government and businesses needing support for their screen-based projects.
Why are we collecting funds?
We know that the fastest way for Tassie filmmakers to succeed is to mix talent with passion, boldness and resources. Wide Angle’s production initiatives have helped Tasmanians create new films – providing hundreds of writers, directors, producers, crew and actors with a pathway to employment and creating their next film. Since 2016 WAT has distributed more than $77,000 from the organisation’s savings to provide small cash budgets to help Tasmanians make their films. Those savings are limited and we’re now asking if you can help to support filmmakers to create in 2020.
How will the funds be used?
In 2016 the $23,000 from the Audacity Fund helped seven teams to create bold and bolshy screen works. We are now looking to raise $20,000 in 2020. Once the funds are secured, Tasmanians will pitch to our screen community who will vote for the projects that most excite them. Then a community panel will decide which projects receive cash budgets, equipment hire, insurances and/or in-house mentorship.
Are donations tax-deductible?
Yes WAT is listed on the Register of Cultural Organisations and is eligible to receive tax deductible donations.
How can you help?
- Give a one-off donation online here, by phone 036223 8344 or in person at 6 Washington Street, South Hobart.
- Share your story of the value of WAT’s production initiatives
- Let your networks know that we are raising funds – and ask for their donation
Massive Thanks to our generous supporters so far!
