CALL FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST

Wide Angle Tasmania is seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified Tasmanian resident film makers who have the desire and capacity to support an exciting digital storytelling initiative with members of Tasmania ’s Aboriginal community.

The brief is to spend four weeks (over a 7 week period) working with and for members of the Tasmanian Aboriginal community in order to;

a) work with community members to develop the themes to be explored in a short documentary
b) pass on basic film making techniques to a small group of participants, including youth participants.
c) oversee and ensure the production of a quality short form documentary that will be screened to accompany an upcoming exhibition, and will also be used to attract further investment in film making activities.

This is a collaborative project, requiring high level communication skills, cultural sensitivity and high quality technical expertise.

An Aboriginal film maker will be available to provide support regarding project planning & delivery, and communication issues.

The project will commence in late May, subject to funding. The fee is $6,600. All equipment will be provided by Wide Angle Tasmania . The workshop component of the project will be developed in collaboration with Wide Angle Tasmania and The Torch Project http://www.thetorch.asn.au/

Essential Requirements
Evidence of high level film making skills
High level camera, sound and editing skills, including experience in using Final Cut Pro
Excellent communication and listening skills

Desirable Requirements

Certificate IV in Workplace Training (or equivalent experience)

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST – Aboriginal Filmmaker required for Aboriginal community project.

Expressions of interest are sought from an Aboriginal Filmmaker to work on a documentary and train young people with the Tasmanian Aboriginal Elders Council.

This project will involve collaborating with and mentoring a non-indigenous filmmaker.

Availability:     3 weeks over 7 week timeframe May 29/30 to July 19th . Intensive two weeks June 2-13

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST - from Tasmanian resident Filmmakers and/or Production Companies

Wide Angle Tasmania is calling for Expressions of Interest from suitably skilled filmmakers for a community film project that will be used as a key promotional tool for Tasmanian Regional Arts.

The project will involve a number of elements;

  • ongoing consultation and collaboration with Tasmanian Regional Arts and Wide Angle Tasmania
  • the delivery of camera and sound training (with tutors and equipment provided by Wide Angle Tasmania from a separate budget) to members of Tasmanian Regional Arts in June
  • scripting a 7 minute promotional film that engages and promotes the regional arts sector as a major player in the artistic landscape of Tasmania
  • gathering footage and short interviews with key Tasmanian artistic identities and organisations, as well as sourcing appropriate archival footage
  • overseeing the quality of footage gathered by members of regional arts communities as they document their arts activities
  • delivery by the end of September 2008 of a high quality 7 minute work on DVD, plus a 30 second teaser.

The budget for this project is approx. $7000 (following confirmation of funding). Camera, sound and editing equipment plus insurances will be provided by Wide Angle Tasmania from a separate budget. (Please see the 'gear gire' section of our website for details of equipment available.)

SLINGSHOT – TAKING TASSIE SHORT FILMS TO THE WORLD

Wide Angle Tasmania (WAT) and the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) are proud to launch SLINGSHOT – a new short film distribution partnership designed to assist Tasmanian filmmakers intaking their short films to the film festivals of the world.

“This partnership is an exciting opportunity for Tasmanian filmmakers to access strategic knowledge of the world’s film festivals. We are delighted to establish this relationship with the AFTRS, and are thrilled that Screen Tasmania has decided to support this initiative” said Beverley Jefferson, General Manager of Wide Angle Tasmania .

Through the generous support of Screen Tasmania , WAT and AFTRS will provide tailored advice and financial support for the marketing and distribution of a select group of Tasmanian short films in 2008. Ruth Saunders, AFTRS Sales and Distribution Manager, will be the primaryconsultant for SLINGSHOT in a unique partnership between Australia ’s national film school and Tasmania ’s only not for profit screen resource organisation.

Filmmakers will be asked to submit their existing marketing materials along with their films in three rounds in 2008. From each round up to four films will be selected to receive specialized support, and each film maker will then also receive a small cash grant to assist them in distributing their films to the most appropriate festivals worldwide.

SLINGSHOT SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

In order to apply for assistance to SLINGSHOT your film must fulfill thefollowing requirements;

1. Film duration must be less than 15 minutes.
2. The film must have been finished within 2007 or 2008.
3. Each film must be the original work of the Tasmanian resident filmmaker.
4. Each film must have the requisite individual, performer and location releases, and have obtained the necessary rights to any copyrighted materials used within the film.
5. Each film must be accompanied by a one sentence synopsis, a one paragraph synopsis, a one page (maximum) Directors Statement, including any relevant background notes, a high resolution head shot of the Director,and a selection of high resolution production stills.
6. Each film must specify the shooting and finishing formats for the film.
7. Each film must be accompanied by a post-production script.
8. The filmmaker must specify which (if any) festivals/screenings the film has already entered/received.
9. The filmmaker should provide a copy of any marketing strategies or materials that have already been developed.

Up to four films will be selected from each round (with a maximum of 10 per year) by Edwina Morris - Manager AFTRS Tasmania, Beverley Jefferson - General Manager Wide Angle Tasmania and a yet to be appointed Film andTV Producer. Unsuccessful applicants will also receive some feedback from the panel.

The films that are selected for SLINGSHOT will be viewed by Ruth Saunders, AFTRS Sales and Distribution Manager. Each filmmaker will then receive strategic advice and feedback on a number of areas including which festivals, markets and events are most suitable for the film and how the films existing marketing materials can be improved upon in order to have the greatest effect.

Grants to assist distribution costs of approximately $300 per film will also be made available, although Wide Angle Tasmania reserves the right to awardless money to some films and more to others, depending on their potential reach.

INTRODUCTION TO SOUND COURSE

Date/time: Saturday May 17 th 10am-4pm

Cost: $120 full / $90 concession

This location sound course is designed to introduce students to the basic skills required to obtain good, clean location audio for both film and documentary production with a particular focus on using Wide Angle's new audio equipment to achieve this. Students will be given an overview of the audio production process in order to better understand what is required to obtain good sound as well as taken through the basic setup and operation of field mixers, directional microphones and boom poles. Correct settings for recording to camera will also be given special attention as well as correct monitoring (listening) techniques.

The course assumes little or no prior knowledge of audio production.

REELDANCE FESTIVAL 2008

Salamanca Arts Centre together with Wide Angle Tasmania is delighted to be presenting REELDANCE.

Last seen in Hobart in 2006, the ReelDance International Dance on Screen Festival 2008 is the 5 th biennial ReelDance Festival since 2000. The 2008 program will have an overall focus on dance and movement in everyday life with content ranging from ballroom to flamenco and from capoeira to parkour.
A unique event, ReelDance celebrates the fusion of dance and film by showcasing the best contemporary local and international dance shorts and movies, as well as incorporating an exciting range of live programs that invite audience participation, including workshops and forums for dance artists and filmmakers.

This year’s Festival shines the spotlight on how dance, in its many guises, influences and enhances our everyday lives, by offering an eclectic programme that will have even those of us with two ‘left feet’ dreaming of tripping the ‘light fantastic’!

Seven distinct screening sessions will form part of the 2008 line-up, which will culminate in the REELDANCE AWARDS for Australian and New Zealand shorts and documentaries to be presented in Sydney on 18th May. Another program highlight will be a touring SWING CLUB that will feature a live band performing amidst projected archival swing dance footage, replete with dancing demonstrations.

W.A.T. CAT FILMS - TASSIE MUSIC VIDEOS

Wide Angle Tasmania (W.A.T.), Tasmania’s screen resource centre, are pleased to announce regular monthly screenings of short films at The Alley Cat. The aim of this programme is to encourage discussion, debate and appreciation for the work of emerging film makers. Anyone with an interest in film will be able to enjoy viewing works from around the state and around the country in a relaxed and informal atmosphere.

This course is a fantastic opportunity for aspiring actors, directors and DOP’s to gain valuable experience in a practical screen performance intensive course. The Course Director and Tutor is Di Drew , one of Australia ’s most respected and award winning, drama directors and producers. The actors that Di will be working with on the first day of the Masterclass are the award winning actors Genevieve Picot and Tara Morice, both Tasmanians who have impressive reputations as screen performers.

The Masterclass will introduce a select group of aspiring directors to the skills required to direct actors for the screen, and will also introduce a select group of aspiring actors to the skills required to work with a director whilst they are acting for the screen. Additionally this course will enable an emerging DOP to gain valuable industry experience by having on-set tutelage from an experienced DOP, and then to work with the course director over three days of filming.

It is intended that this course will be a pre-requisite for an advanced Masterclass (still in development) that will provide actors, directors and camera operators with a show reel.

The course is broken into two sections, with the first day focusing on observation of Di as she works with Genevieve and Tara and the second part comprising a three day intensive open to 6 directors, 12 actors and 2 camera operators.

Please note that this course is subject to a selection process. Participants will be asked to write a half page outline of their professional expectations from such a course. They will be asked to summarize their strengths, weaknesses and professional aspirations.

Di Drew Biography

Di Drew is one of Australia’s most respected and award winning, drama directors and producers. The Australian Directors Guild recently awarded her their ADG Award “in recognition of consistent excellence in the art of screen direction in feature film and television direction”.

 Her impressive body of work includes the feature films Hildegarde - starring Richard E. Grant and Tara Morice; The Right Hand Man - starring Rupert Everett, Hugo Weaving & Catherine McClements; telemovies Trouble In Paradise - starring Raquel Welch & Jack Thompson; Whipping Boy - starring Sigrid Thornton & Temuera Morrison and mini series Seven Deadly Sins; Gluttony - starring Richard Roxburgh and Gia Carides; Spring And Fall - starring Ruth Cracknell and Robyn Nevin and the landmark 1915 - starring Sigrid Thornton & Scott McGregor for which she won a Penguin Award for Best Director.

Di’s work has gained both local and international recognition at some of the world’s most prestigious film festivals: Hildegarde won the Grand Jury Prizeat the Kinderfilmfest in Japan ; the Jury Awardat the Chicago Film Festival 2002 and featured in competition at the Berlin Film Festival, and the Turin International Film Festivalin 2003. Right Hand Man opened the Monterey Film Festivaland won an AFI ACS Award. A Graduate of the Australian Film, Television & Radio School (AFTRS) her graduation film Tread Softly won the Greater Union Award at the Sydney Film festival. As producer of All Saints, Di brought the Seven Network’s drama series to the number one position three years in a row achieving two gold Logies, seven Silver Logies and twice awarded the double Logie for Australia ’s Most Popular Drama and Most Popular Program.

She has directed some of the most successful series on Australian television, including All Saints, GP, A Country Practice and Bananas In Pyjamas . In theatre Di won the best Production and best director with her first production Picnic On The Battlefield. Other theatre credits include Cabaret, Oliver, the Green Room Award winning Knuckle Dusters with Kerry Walker, and the one-woman play Machiavelli, Machiavelli starring Ruth Cracknell. 2004 saw her direct the mini series Through My Eyes starring Miranda Otto, Craig McLachlan and Peter O’Brien and an impressive cast of Australia ’s “A” list actors.

Di recently finished directing Monarch Cove, a US television drama series for Lifetime Cable US and is currently attached as Director on two feature film projects

Tara Morice

Tara Morice is an Australian actress, singer, and dancer. She has appeared in Dancing with the Stars, Strictly Ballroom, and Moulin Rouge!. Morice was nominated for a BAFTA and AFI Award for her role in Strictly Ballroom. She was also for a short time, a presenter on Play School.

She also starred in Candy, and Razzle Dazzle.

Genevieve Picot

Genevieve Picot is an award winning Australian actress who has appeared in many Australian films and Television series.

FILM SAFETY SEMINAR

WAT is seeking expressions of interest from film makers who want to undergo a basic film safety training course.

Filming produces a whole set of safety issues that are unique to the industry. In this one day seminar you will learn some essential procedures to that will help you to minimize dangers on set and on location. Please note that if there is enough demand, this course will be run in both Hobart and Launceston.
